Guinness Premiership sets new attendance record at midway point

The 2006/07 Guinness Premiership has set a new mid-season attendance record through the first thirteen rounds, with Premier Rugby announcing that cumulative crowds are already ahead of last season's pace — driven in part by the new extended half-time interval.

Premier Rugby today announced that the 2006/07 Guinness Premiership has recorded a new mid-season attendance landmark through the first thirteen rounds of the campaign, with cumulative crowds already running ahead of last season's comparable figure.

The average attendance through the opening thirteen rounds stands at 11,982 — an increase of more than seven per cent on the equivalent stage of the 2005/06 season. The figures include a record crowd of 16,815 at Welford Road for the Round 10 clash between Leicester Tigers and London Wasps, and sell-out fixtures at Kingsholm, The Stoop and the Recreation Ground over the Christmas and New Year period.

Mark McCafferty, Chief Executive of Premier Rugby, said: "These figures are extremely encouraging and reflect the growing commercial strength of the competition. We set ourselves ambitious targets at the start of the season and the clubs have delivered magnificently — the Guinness Premiership is in the best shape it has ever been."

A key contributor to improved atmosphere at grounds has been the decision — announced before the season — to extend the half-time interval from the traditional ten minutes to fifteen. Supporters have responded positively to the additional time, with clubs reporting increased refreshment revenue and a better overall matchday experience.

"The extended half-time has been a genuine success," added McCafferty. "Clubs put a great deal of work into improving the entertainment offering at the ground and supporters are reaping the benefits. We're hearing very positive feedback across the board."

On the pitch, Gloucester top the table after thirteen rounds with 44 points, one ahead of Leicester Tigers on 43 following Newcastle's dramatic 31–29 victory at Kingston Park on Sunday that interrupted the Tigers' strong run of form. Bristol occupy third spot on 37 points, with Saracens and London Wasps close behind.

Round 14 fixtures are scheduled for 26–28 January, following the break for clubs to prepare for the RBS Six Nations, which begins on 3 February with England's opening fixture against Scotland at Twickenham. Premier Rugby confirmed that the agreed release window for England, Wales, Scotland, Ireland, France and Italy preparations will be respected, with the Premiership calendar designed to minimise disruption to domestic clubs.

Tickets for Round 14 fixtures — including Gloucester versus Sale Sharks at Kingsholm, and Leicester Tigers versus Newcastle Falcons at Welford Road — are available from club websites.
