Leicester Tigers are the 2006/07 Guinness Premiership champions after a stunning 44–16 victory over Gloucester Rugby at Twickenham on Saturday, watched by a capacity crowd of 60,248 — a new Premiership final attendance record.

The Tigers, who topped the regular-season table with 78 points, were utterly dominant from the moment Olly Barkley's early penalty gave Gloucester a fleeting lead. After that, the match belonged entirely to Leicester. Andy Goode orchestrated proceedings from fly-half with a masterful kicking display, contributing 24 points through three penalties, two conversions and two drop-goals.

Martin Corry led the side superbly, and the Tigers' pack dominated the Gloucester eight at the set-piece with a ferocity that the Cherry and Whites were never able to match. Tom Varndell crossed for two tries, the young winger's electric pace repeatedly carving open the Gloucester backline. Harry Ellis, Lewis Moody and Martin Johnson — making a rare comeback appearance off the bench — each contributed to a memorable forward display.

"This is a special day for everyone connected with this club," said captain Corry afterwards. "We've worked incredibly hard all season, the supporters have been magnificent, and to win at Twickenham is always the dream. This group of players deserves everything they've achieved."

Gloucester, who edged out London Wasps in their semi-final, never really found their rhythm against a Tiger defence that allowed only two scoring opportunities. Phil Vickery was outstanding in the scrum, and winger Marcel Garvey showed some dangerous touches, but Gloucester were simply outclassed on the day.

The win secured Leicester's sixth Guinness Premiership title and first since the 2001/02 campaign — ending what had felt like a long wait at Welford Road — and gave head coach Marcelo Loffreda the perfect farewell after announcing his resignation to return to Argentina duties.

Premier Rugby Chief Executive Mark McCafferty said: "What a magnificent advert for English rugby. A record crowd, a magnificent match and two clubs who have played their part all season. Congratulations to Leicester Tigers — worthy champions."

Season summary: Leicester Tigers 78 pts (champions); Gloucester Rugby 67 pts (finalists); London Wasps 65 pts (semi-finalists); Bristol Rugby 60 pts (semi-finalists). Bristol Rugby are relegated. Leeds Carnegie are promoted.
